Caring for Pets with Back Problems

At Accuvet Veterinary Hospital, we know how scary it can be when your pet suddenly can't walk, is in pain, or just isn't acting like themselves. Spinal issues—especially Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)—can be serious, but with the right care, many pets can return to a happy, active life.

What is IVDD?

IVDD happens when the discs between the bones in your pet’s spine slip or burst, putting pressure on the spinal cord. This can cause anything from mild pain to full paralysis. It's most common in breeds like Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, and Bassets, but can affect many dogs.

Signs to watch for:

  • Sudden back or neck pain
  • Difficulty walking or a wobbly gait
  • Reluctance to jump or climb stairs
  • Yelping when touched or picked up
  • In severe cases: dragging legs, loss of bladder control

How we can help

If we suspect IVDD or another spinal issue, we’ll start with a full examination and discuss the best way forward. Some pets improve with rest and medication, but others may need spinal surgery to relieve the pressure on the spine.

At Accuvet, we offer:

  • Gentle, thorough neurological exams
  • X-rays and advanced imaging referrals if needed
  • Experienced spinal surgery, including decompression procedures
  • Loving, professional post-op care
  • Recovery support, rehab guidance and physiotherapy

We’re here to guide you every step of the way, from diagnosis to recovery—always with your pet’s comfort, dignity, and well-being at heart.
